Dive into the History of Mother's Day

As we enter the beautiful month of May, we get to enjoy the warming weather and celebrate mothers all around the world. That’s right, Mother’s Day is coming up. Take this as your reminder to treat the mother’s in your life on this day. Since May is the month of motherhood, I thought it would be a great idea to dedicate it to the history of Mother’s day, and why it holds meaning in our lives.

Mother’s Day Beginnings

The celebration of mothers can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They both held festivals to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Rhea is associated with fruitfulness and is known to be the mother of the gods as well as the goddess of motherhood, fertility, and generation. Rhea means “flow” and “ease.” As the wife of Kronos the god of time, Rhea represents the eternal flow of time and generations.

Cybele is the Roman goddess of fertility and protectress in times of war. Cybele is also the mother to all, both gods, humans, animals, and plants. Indeed a mother of all. In the beginning, cults were banned in Rome as the leaders believed that the gods/goddesses were a threat to their power. However, Cybele’s following continued to grow and therefore the Romans sanctioned the religion.

Christian Mother’s Day Beginnings

Then in the 17th century, the Christians began to have a celebration called Mothering Sunday. In this celebration, people would visit their mother church in the area you grew up in and eat simnel cake, which is a fruit cake. It didn’t particularly involve actual mothers until a revival in 1913 after High Anglican Constance Smith was inspired by America’s celebration of Mother’s Day.

In America, Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. After her own mother’s death, she created a day to honor all of the sacrifices mothers make. As she believed that American holidays were biased towards male achievements, Jarvis fought to get Mother’s Day onto the calendar.

Celebrate Mothers in Any Way You Can

Mother’s Day is on May 8th, so you have some time left to plan something. Now, it doesn’t have to be expensive, or over the top. Homemade gifts are always cute and thoughtful. Simple gestures of kindness are also a great way to celebrate the mother’s in your life. This is a great time to get together and say thank you, for all the hard work that mothers do.

We all become so engulfed and busy in our own lives, that we sometimes forget about the special intimate moments we miss out on. Take this as a sign to reach out, even if all you’re able to do is a phone call. The smallest gestures are still just as important and appreciated as the big ones.
