There’s a very special event taking place on March 20th. This special event is the Ostara aka the Spring Equinox. As we prepare to welcome in the delights of spring, let’s talk about what exactly the equinox is, the history of its celebration, and the significance this has on our lives.
What is the Spring Equinox?
The spring equinox is held from March 20 - 23rd to welcome the first day of spring, as the sun passes over the equator into the Northern Hemisphere. The word equinox derives from the Latin words “equal” and “night” meaning that this is a time where the daytime and nighttime are of equal length.
During this time and on, we can finally welcome back the longer days of sunshine and light. No more darkness at 4:00 pm, we can go back to doing outside activities after work. Equinoxes are the only time where the sun travels and rises in the east and sets in the west, no matter where you’re located on Earth.
Celebrations of the Spring Equinox
Many celebrate this time by holding festivals in honor of the spring Gods and Goddesses. You may see the name Ostara associated with the spring equinox. This word comes from the Goddess of spring, Eostre. Pagans mark this as a time of rebirth and fertility. Pagans and Wiccans tend to celebrate by meditating or performing a ceremony to welcome in spring. Another way people like to celebrate the spring equinox is by planting seeds, so flowers and crops grow and blossom. Celebrations of the spring equinox date back to ancient civilizations and continue on today. In Mexico, by the ruins of the Mayan city, people gather in the afternoon to watch the sun pass by the pyramids. When this happens, the shadows take on a snake-like shape that “moves” down to the base of the pyramid where it meets the serpent structure at the bottom.
The Significance of the Spring Equinox
As the spring equinox marks spring, it also signifies new beginnings. What that new beginning is, varies between people, but we can all use the time to achieve our goals. If there’s something that you want to achieve, but aren’t too sure about starting, take this as your sign to start now. It could be as simple as starting a new hobby, or something a little more personal, like taking that next step in your relationship. Whatever it may be, this is a time for you and achieving what you want out of life. This is the World’s way of telling you to start now.
